I don’t remember what we were discussing as we walked through the Tenderloin that day. It was foggy and cold. For some reason I told you about my fascination with people’s faces, about watching them in the street. You seemed slightly surprised at the idea of considering a stranger’s face. You told me that you don’t see the faces of those you pass by. I remember feeling sad. I asked you why not. You said you didn’t know.

how precise and delicately he scraped between the cracks

in the sidewalk.

 

On his hands and knees

I’ve never witnessed a being existing so much

in the present.

It was there at some point, I’m sure

but the morning sun must have burned it up:

 

We’re all searching for the same ghosts.

The

Pigeons

 

The disregarded gentleness

of city birds has emerged

in a sheltered concrete shaft

outside my bathroom window

where a couple of pigeons

have chosen to make their nest,

which makes me an unseen

while intimate guest

each time I pee or brush my teeth

and see the babies sleeping,

heads tucked like turtles

into the puffed pillows

of their small quivering

bodies at rest.

We are smaller clouds in the greater fog.

Occasionally our surfaces press against one another

At red lights, or liquor store lines

But our worlds are not the same

And you emerge out of the density of your own presence

To ask me for change, or to give me the once over

And I meet you there, and we make our interactions short

So that we may move through the storm cloud

Of our shared space

Unperturbed
